18 March 2009

A recent study announced identified the main areas across the nation that may be the worst hit by the economic downturn and found that jobs Melbourne may experience large pockets of jobs losses and unemployment due to its reliance on the manufacturing and heavy industry sectors for jobs.

The study made its conclusions based suburbs demographic breakdown of average age, casual jobs employment, university and TAFE student levels and the number of jobs Melbourne dependent on vulnerable industries such as manufacturing or construction.

The style of household predicted to be the hardest hit by the oncoming would be those that are indebted and have a dual income whereby one is a part time or casual job. Melbourne suburbs on the whole that may be the worst affected included those that are made of mainly part time jobs such as tourist areas or suburbs dependent on industries not expected to survive the recession unscathed.

However, Melbourne areas with an average income, low levels of casual jobs Melbourne and with higher education levels are expected to remain relatively safe.

The Federal Governments has earlier announced its own forecasts of the national unemployment rate could reach 7 per cent by 2010.
